Joshua Pearl is the Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Hickory Lane Capital Management LP, an equity long/short investment management firm. He focuses on equity investments and special situations utilizing a fundamentals-based approach, primarily in the technology/media/telecommunications (TMT), industrials, and consumer sectors. Prior to founding Hickory Lane, for nine years he served as a Managing Director and Partner at Brahman Capital, an equity long/short manager focused on investing with best-in-class management teams.
Prior to his investing career, he spent eight years as an investment banker at UBS Investment Bank, Moelis & Company, and Deutsche Bank focusing on high yield financings, leveraged buyouts, restructurings, mergers & acquisitions, activism, and board advisory. He is also the co-author of several books, including Investment Banking: Valuation, LBOs, M&A, and IPOs and The Little Book of Investing Like the Pros: Five Steps for Picking Stocks.
The Little Book of Investing Like the Pros: Five Steps for Picking Stocks employs real-world examples and financial models to teach readers how to pick stocks in an easy-to-understand, step-by-step manner. The book’s goal is straightforward—to impart the skills necessary for finding high-quality stocks while protecting a portfolio with risk management best practices. Stock investing is more prevalent than ever, whether directly or indirectly through brokerage accounts, exchange-traded funds, mutual funds, or retirement plans. Despite this, the vast majority of individual investors have no training on how to pick stocks. And, until now, there hasn’t been a truly accessible, easy-to-understand resource available to help them.
Investment Banking: Valuation, LBOs, M&A, and IPOs is a highly accessible book written by practitioners that explains how to perform the valuation work at the core of the financial world. The genesis for the original book stemmed from Joshua Pearl and Joshua Rosenbaum’s personal experiences as students seeking to break into Wall Street. As they went through the rigorous process of interviewing for associate and analyst positions at investment banks, they realized that their classroom experience was a step removed from how valuation and financial analysis are performed in real-world situations. As a result, this book fills a noticeable gap in contemporary finance literature, which tends to focus on theory rather than practical application.
Joshua Pearl has been profiled across numerous media outlets including CNBC, Institutional Investor, AlphaWeek, Bloomberg Markets, Newsmax, The UK Telegraph, The Charles Mizrahi Show, The Princeton Financier, and Harvard College Investment Magazine. He has corporate partnerships with Nasdaq, the leading U.S. exchange and technology provider for IPOs and new listings; global law firm Latham & Watkins, the #1 IPO adviser and #1 public M&A adviser; Datasite, the #1 provider in M&A lifecycle software, and Altrum, the global leader in custom deal toys and financial tombstones.
He earned his B.S. in Business from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business in 2003. Joshua grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and currently resides in New York, New York with his family.
